Degree Program Overview
The School of Information Studies offers the opportunity to blend basic concerns for information needs of people, organizations, and institutions with involvement in cutting edge technology and systems for acquiring, storing, organizing, and delivering information. You will obtain the skill needed to match information systems to information needs as you work towards becoming an information professional. This field offers career diversity, opportunity based on growth and expansion, important and fascinating work, and an opportunity to work with emerging technology from a humanistic focus. The School of Information Studies at the Florida State University is one of the top-ranked programs in the nation and has held such ranking for many years.
The Master of Science and Master of Arts Degrees focus on users and their interaction with information technology, products, services and organizations. Areas of interest to students include information technology, youth services, information architecture, information resources and services, and information management and policy.
The ultimate goal of our program is to provide students with the foundation for beginning their careers as information professionals. Graduates will possess a broad understanding of the field to become general practitioners and sufficient depth in a selected area to begin developing specializations in the field. A thesis is optional for either the MS or MA. No foreign language is required for our degree programs except the Master of Arts.
If you earn a Master's Degree in Information Studies, you are qualified to practice in a variety of contexts, including libraries. The American Library Association (ALA) accredits the Master's Degree.
Small classrooms and accessible faculty promote a more personal learning environment. Face-to-face and web-based courses are offered by full-time resident faculty.
