Learn more about the master's program and the Early Childhood Autism Program

FSU Psychology Dept.

The undergraduate program in Psychology at FSU Panama City offers many courses to give the student a broad background in the study of behavior, as well as courses for the advanced student who has more specialized interests. It is the intent of the program that the level of knowledge attained by the successful major will be such that the student is well prepared for graduate-level studies in any of the specialty areas in Psychology or for advanced training in a professional school. The Psychology Department provides opportunities to gain research and practical experiences working in the field. For example, students have been given the opportunity to work in the Early Childhood Autism Program or local public school classrooms as well as a number of other settings, conduct research under the direction of faculty, and present their work to peer audiences.  In addition, students may become active members of the academic community via membership in the Psychology Club or the Emerald Coast Association for Behavior Analysis. Most students begin their college education at a regional community college and then transfer to FSU Panama City after earning an Associate of Arts degree or after 60 or more semester hours of transferrable credit have been completed.

Once at FSU PC, psychology students will take 60 hours of upper division courses (36 hours in the major, 12 to 18 hours towards a minor that must be completed in a different department, and the remaining hours in electives or completing College of Arts and Sciences requirements). All students majoring in psychology are required to complete certain prerequisites: one course in biological science, two lower level psychology courses including PSY2012, and one statistics course (STA2122 preferred and needed before graduation) - all completed with a C- or better. These prerequisites, plus the core courses, prepare students for a variety of careers in the field. They also provide a solid foundation for those seeking a master’s degree in psychology with a specialty in Applied Behavior Analysis.
